Before I became a makeup artist and way before I knew what I was doing, technically speaking, I truly thought I knew a lot because I just loved makeup! I loved everything about it, and still do, from the products themselves right up to the runway shows of the fashionistas in Paris or New York. I loved it all. Because of that I studied it all. I studied how to apply it, how to buy it, how to keep it safe, how to do tricks with it, how to do what only I could do with it and no-one else. I created my own looks (some were really bad too), I practised on my friends, I practised on myself, I did it all.

Then I enrolled in the best (and most expensive) makeup course there was at the time and after graduating I really beefed things up by getting the best agent in town and working as hard and as much as I could. I hit the ground running as they say and never looked back.

I worked all over Australia, then in Bali and the Maldives, I worked in London and Hamburg, Germany and then New York, the Big Apple and thought I knew it all. Well almost.

But do you know the one thing that I missed? The one thing I thought I could go without and didn't realise I couldnt, until it was almost too late for me. This one thing became the slingshot that catapulted me into a totally new level of professional makeup, faster than a speeding bullet !!

That one thing was a chance meeting with Stephane Marais. Stephane Marais was the reason I got into makeup in the first place! Although not known by many outside the makeup world, to me he was my makeup god! ( Google Stephane Marias to see what I'm talking about.) And where was this chance meeting? It was deep underground on the Lexington line of the New York subway. There he was sitting opposite me. Read: heart pulpitations and shortness of breath. My god I flipped out on the inside, while trying to have some sort of composure on the outside! I have worked in the company of a large number of celebrities from JLo to Demi Moore to Jon Bon Jovi and so on, but none took my breath away as much, because here was my makeup idol. I'm sure you understand my excitement.

Lo and behold, 3 weeks later I was in Tuscany, Italy, working as Stephane's assistant makeup artist on a fashion shoot with glamour model and super cool chic, Lara Stone. Those four days became the makeup masterclass I had meant to have all my life.

The experience was life changing and the subject matter was impeccable. From that week on I was inspired once again. I was re energised. I had a new purpose and I was much more highly skilled than ever before and suddenly, with an aura of invincibility one gets alongside confidence and self assuredness, suddenly new doors opened, new opportunities presented themselves and my career took another exciting turn. I had never worked with so many exciting and talented people until then, my skill set was sky high and it was all because I had raised the bar. The money was great too by the way.

From that point on I have always thought of myself as the student. Willing to learn more. Hoping to get better. Wanting to be better.
